How to use The Butterfly Swaddle
Learn how to smoothly transition through each stage using the Butterfly Swaddle and Wrap Band, step by step, so your baby stays comfortable and sleeps soundly as they grow.
Cocoon Stage
0–6 Weeks - Both arms swaddled inside with the wrap band
In the earliest weeks of life, babies feel safest when their arms are gently contained close to their body. The Cocoon Stage recreates the snug, womb-like feeling newborns crave while helping reduce the Moro reflex that can wake them during sleep.
During this stage:
• Both arms remain comfortably wrapped inside the band
• Gentle compression helps calm the nervous system
• Startle reflex movements are minimized
• Babies experience longer, more settled sleep
This stage is ideal for newborns who still need the full security of a traditional swaddle.
Wing Stage
6–12 Weeks - One arm wrapped in the band, one arm through the sleeve
As babies grow, they begin to develop more control over their arms and may show signs they are ready for more freedom. The Wings Stage allows babies to transition gradually by freeing one arm at a time.
During this stage:
• One arm remains supported within the wrap band
• One arm is free through the sleeve
• Mesh wing trainers provide gentle support with slowing of the startle reflex to decrease unwanted self-waking
• Babies begin adapting to arms-out sleep
This gradual change helps babies adjust naturally without disrupting sleep, making the transition smoother for both babies and parents.
Butterfly Stage
12–16 Weeks - Both arms free
Once babies are comfortable sleeping with more movement, they enter the Butterfly Stage sleeping with both arms free.
During this stage:
• Arms move freely for natural development
• The wrap band can still be used under the arms for gentle support if desired
• Babies transition fully into independent sleep
This stage supports healthy development while maintaining the comfort and familiarity of the sleep sack with arms free.
